Afghanistan currently imports about 800 MW of electricity from neighboring Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This costs the country between $250 and $280 million annually. Afghanistan''s western provinces have long purchased electricity from eastern Iran. Afghanistan purchases as much as 150 MW of electricity from Tajikistan. After completion, the CASA-1000 mega project will provide an additional 300 MW of electricity to Afghanistan, with the remaining
