Up to present date, the station provides up to 11% of the total power generation in Tajikistan. The construction of Sangtuda HPP-2 officially began in 2006. For the construction of the facility, the Iranian company Sangob allocated US$ 318.9 million, the share of the Tajik side was US$ 40 million. The plant was launched in September 2014.
