Feed-in tariffs were high and panels expensive, so they had to face north to maximise electricity production and earn the most feed-in tariff money possible. But high feed-in tariffs are a thing of the past and solar panels are now far cheaper, so the question of orientation is more complicated.
According to a 2024 study by Yorkshire-based installer Oval Renewables, north-facing panels are around 54% as effective as south-facing ones. So they can still contribute meaningfully, especially in tandem with panels facing other directions.
Solar panels that face east or west will produce about 15% less energy than those installed on a south-facing roof. A north-facing roof is the worst direction for solar, as panels will produce around 30% less energy than if they face south.
Studies have also shown that, due to improvements in solar panel technology, even with North-facing panels, solar production still achieves 54% of that from South-facing panels. When considering the direction you want your panels to face, it is also worth considering when you want to generate electricity to match your usage.
