In June 2020, Masdar signed an agreement with the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan and JSC National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan to design, finance, build and operate a 500-megawatt (MW) utility-scale wind farm project.
Developed, built and to operated by Masdar, the wind farm is the largest of its kind in Central Asia and the first to be constructed in Uzbekistan. The Zarafshan project is Central Asia's largest wind farm. The 500MW capacity plant will power 500,00 homes.
The Zarafshan Wind Farm, which is located in the Navoi region, has a capacity of 500MW, provides enough electricity to power 150,000 homes, and displaces over 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Implementation of utility scale Wind Plant on PPP base require Presidential Decree (PD) to be issued. PD serves as a base for land allocation by Khokimiyats (municipalities). Land lease agreements are concluded between project developer and local municipalities.
